Beyond the Books: How Internships Propel Your Career
Financial Growth Chronicals: Beyond the Books
Discover the unmatched value of internships with FGP, where you don’t just add to your resume—you build real skills, forge professional connections, and align your career with your core values. Dive into our hands-on approach that ensures every internship is a step towards your personal and professional growth.

As a college student, I was an athlete first and school came second. While that did not hurt my grades, it slowed down my professional growth when it came to gaining experience, figuring out how I wanted to grow professionally, and gaining basic office skills. I fell into an internship by change as 2nd semester Junior, and that skyrocketed my growth. That internship turned into my first full-time job, and fast forward many years later working with college students to find their path has been a huge passion for me. At Financial Growth Partners, I lead our Internship and Externship programs, which focus on advancing the human capital of all students who participate. There is so much more to an internship than just landing your first job. It’s about the 5 tips below that will allow for motion in the right direction to find the best role, culture, and professional environment for you!

1.EXPERIENCE, EXPERIENCE, EXPERIENCE: Build Your Resume
Internships and externships provide you with hands-on, real-world experience that classroom lectures simply can't replicate. Whether you're learning the intricacies of marketing strategies, honing your coding skills, or shadowing a seasoned executive, each experience adds depth and credibility to your resume. Employers today seek candidates who not only have academic knowledge, but also practical skills gained through internships.

2. Develop a Network
They say your network is your net worth, and this couldn't be truer in today's world. During your internship, you'll have the opportunity to meet professionals across various departments and industries. These connections can lead to mentorship opportunities, letters of recommendation, or even future job offers. Networking isn't just about collecting business cards; it's about cultivating relationships that can support and guide your career path.

3. Learn Basic Office Skills
From answering phone calls to drafting emails and organizing meetings, internships teach you essential office skills that are fundamental in any professional setting. These seemingly small tasks build your competence and confidence in navigating the corporate environment. By the end of your internship, you'll be proficient in skills that are invaluable regardless of your chosen career path.

4. Learn What Type of Office Culture and Core Values You Align With
Internships offer a firsthand look into different organizational cultures and core values. By experiencing these cultures firsthand, you gain insight into what motivates you, where you thrive, and the type of environment where you can make a meaningful impact. Understanding your own values and preferences early in your career can guide your future job search and ensure alignment with companies that share your vision.

5. Finding Out What You Don't Like Is Just as Valuable as What You Do Like
Not every internship will align perfectly with your career aspirations, and that's okay. In fact, discovering what you don't enjoy is just as important as identifying your passions. Internships allow you to explore different roles, industries, and work environments, helping you clarify your professional goals and preferences. Each experience, whether confirming your interests or redirecting your path, contributes to your personal growth and career development.
