Retirement vs. Repurposed: Knowing the Difference, Part 2

October 22, 2019

Once you differentiate between retirement and Repurposed, chances are you won't have any desire to merely retire. Here's a further breakdown of someone who is retired compared to someone that is Repurposed.

{AUDIO} Retirement vs. Repurposed: Knowing the Difference, Part 2

Retirement

re·tire·ment | ri-ˈtī(-ə)r-mənt: to withdraw from service, to have no more use or meaning

Is this how you want to be described once you retire? Even the root word of retirement is "tire" which means "to feel in need of rest or sleep." Retirement should not be just a time to slow down and grow old. At the heart of Repurposed, this is exactly the type of life we're trying to avoid.

Repurposed:

re·pur·posed | rē-pərˈ-pəsd: to give new use or meaning to

This is a much better representation on the way to view your retirement. Remember, retirement shouldn't be considered merely as an end, but rather a brand new beginning. Repurposed is when you don't just retire FROM something, but retire TO a life of greater purpose, impact and meaning.

Dissatisfied vs. Content

Retirees often feel dissatisfied. This feeling is a result of having "empty rest" - the kind of rest you get merely because you can. "Earned rest" is much different. It's the kind of rest you get after adding value to someone else. Contentment results from not only having your needs fulfilled, but by spending your time making contributions to other people.

Unintentional vs. Adding Value

Many times I hear retirees say things like "I just live in the moment and let my day come to me." Of course, there's nothing wrong with more time and margin in your day. But, one of the biggest adjustments to a retiree's life is intentionally planning-out and using each hour everyday. A Repurposed person is actively looking for and finding ways to add value to others not letting the days and weeks slip away.

Insignificant vs Influential

Society tells retirees they have no more value to offer. Unfortunately, this notion has translated into people unconcerned about how they are going to be remembered. Repurposed people understand they have more to offer than any other generation. Not only do they have the most wisdom and experience to pass along, they now have the most time and margin than ever before.
