Retire Repurposed: Quitting Cold Turkey

November 26, 2019

Even though we recommend a slow and steady transition into retirement, leaving your job "cold turkey" works for many people. If you're planning on leaving your career abruptly heading straight into retirement, here's a few things to keep in mind.

Know the high won't last forever

"Cold turkey" retirees often experience a significant high leaving work for the last time. It's safe to say that high will likely last into the weeks, perhaps, even months to follow. However, it won't last forever. The newness of not having to go to work will feel good - and it should. But, remember we are created to serve and add value. So, it's impossible for that feeling to last forever.

Take a rest, but plan to plan

Flipping the switch from career into retirement overnight is a massive life-change. Take some time and let the dust settle to re-establish your new normal. However, don't wait too long before beginning to map-out the next season of your life. Whether you do this planning-process after you retire or during the final stages of your working years, it needs to happen.

Make sure to stay connected

Some "cold turkey" retirees are so excited to be done working, they can unintentionally disconnect from others. Remember, being part of a bigger community is important and it can be the layer of relationships that suffers the most. At Taatjes Financial Group we take pride that we not only help clients plan financially for retirement, but coach and guide them into a retirement of purpose and fulfillment.
