Changing Externals Does Not Fix Internals

December 01, 2020

It is with great excitement that I announce my return to Taatjes Financial Group. If you recall, I moved my family to South Dakota in late July. It was a tough decision, but I felt it was necessary.

AUDIO: Changing Externals Does Not Fix Internals

The past eight months has been an intense season of sifting and refining both personally and spiritually for me since the onset of COVID-19. One of the biggest lessons I learned the very first day I arrived in South Dakota is that changing the external circumstances in my life (the city and state I lived, my job, etc.) didn’t fix any of my internal problems.

Before moving to South Dakota last summer, I was off-kilter. My marriage was in a funk. My wife and I had parenting and home-schooling struggles with our kids. I was extremely unsettled, frustrated and angry. Furthermore, I wasn’t fond of the political forces at play regarding COVID-19 and all the uncertainties of dealing with this pandemic. In a simplistic way I believed moving away would fix everything.

It didn’t.

I remember waking up one morning no more than two weeks into our South Dakota life and saying to my wife, “I think my biggest problem is…me.” She laughed and said, “I’ve been saying that for 15 years.” The truth is I remember my wife urging me to look inwardly at the reasons I felt this way. She offered help and gave suggestions long before we moved to no avail.

Understanding this flaw was a huge epiphany for me. Once I recognized this, I had a fresh perspective at my former life in Minnesota and job at Taatjes Financial Group. There’s much more to my personal story you will hear in the weeks and months ahead on our radio shows, podcasts and social media platforms. So, stay tuned.

In the meantime, I’m thankful to Ben Taatjes and our team for opening their doors to me again. My updated job title is Director of Business Development which gives me more ability to lead our team members, drive the growth of the company and add more value to our clients. I’m excited for the future of Taatjes Financial Group and our increased tenacity to help people with their life and money.

My email is [email protected]. Feel free to drop me a note anytime.
