Applying for Social Security: Our Process

September 15, 2020

If 2020 has proved anything, it is that we can’t be certain about anything related to the markets.  Most retirement plans were disrupted at some point.  There is one part of retirement plans that was not affected…Social Security.  The decision of when to begin benefits should be one that is well thought out, not an emotional decision based on a retirement date.

It begins with a plan:

We recommend planning for Social Security at least 3 years prior to applying or retiring.  Social Security can be upwards of 75% of a retiree’s income.  Our process walks clients through a detailed plan to help identify when is the best time to take Social Security and be sure to review all of the options available.

Get online access:

Social Security requires all individuals to create an online account through MySocialSecurity.gov.  We walk our clients through this process by sitting down with them and signing them up right here in our office.

Apply for benefits:

The final phase is applying for benefits.  There are three ways to apply:  in person at a Social Security office, over the phone, or online.   Our process includes scheduling an in office meeting with couples or individuals, and walking them through applying for benefits online.  This saves time as there are no waiting lines or endless call hold times.  Again, we sit down at our office with clients and non-clients to help them apply online in only about 15 minutes.
